The VOGUM was scheduled for 5 June 2021 but due to Covid restrictions (in Wales an organised outdoor event can only have a maximum of 50 people – there were over 160 runners due to run) the race organisers have had move the race to August. It was really short notice for the postponement as they had hoped to be able to put on the race.
It’s been a busy old week working out what we’re going to do.
I think you can either let things get you down or you can look at what opportunities come of the situation. Hands up, I’m not always this optimistic when faced with unexpected changes but this time I’ve been able to find the positives.
Along with my eight of my friends we’re going to run our own version of the VOGUM, or FAUX-GUM if you will. We figured we’ve done the training so it would be a shame to waste it as we were all tapering.
We’ve moved the route slightly so that we start six miles into the actual route. This means that we can finish in Cardiff rather than Penarth so it’ll be easier for our friends and family to support us, socially distanced of course.
We’re very lucky to belong to such an amazing running group (She Runs Cardiff) and some of our members, and other halfs, have very kindly agreed to provide support at aid stations including us still being able to have drop bags to change half way.
The last of the logistics are fitting into place now. All we need to do is book the taxi to get there, make sure our drop bags are at the appointed place and we’re good to go. At least I think we’ve covered everything over. There are plenty of shops on the route if we’ve forgotten anything.
The countdown is really on now….five days and counting to the longest run of our lives. I for one cannot wait. Best get charging the Garmin.
Disclaimer: The VOGUM, or Vale of Glamorgan Ultra Marathon, is actually said as VOG-UM not VO-GUM, but that doesn’t work for my pun!
